Charles Kuralt said, “I don’t have any well-developed philosophy about journalism. Ultimately it is important in a society like this, so people can know about everything that goes wrong.”
We would like to think that our focus with The Delhi Express has primarily been positive. We like to look at the things that are good about this community. We feature students of the month, new business profiles, highlights from school news, exciting community events and complete fair coverage among other positive news. We know that you can read about some of the “everything that goes wrong” in other news sources, so that is not why you pick up the Delhi Express every month.
We have appreciated the local businesses that have consistently advertised with us. We have enjoyed partnerships with local businesses to bring events to town such as the twice annual art shows. Even after we moved from Delhi to Turlock for our house, we continued to support Delhi businesses first and foremost. We practice what we preach. How can we ask you to support Delhi businesses if we don’t do it ourselves?

I had written “the” editorial. It’s the editorial you will find in this issue. It’s the editorial that I found incredibly difficult to write. After all, I love what I do. I love journalism. I love being a part of this community. I appreciate the friends I’ve made out of business contacts. I suspect I will never fully convey that in anything I write, though I do try.
I had just written about how we are now facing uncertainty with The Delhi Express. I had written down the three options as they stand currently. I put it all out there for you, our readers, our friends, our family to see. Then, I took a break. I walked away hoping I could return to my computer with a “business as usual” sentiment in my heart, but more importantly at this point, on my mind. And then, it happened. I started working my way through news releases and student of the month information. I had entered “full steam ahead” and was set to get the job done.
And then, it happened. Reality hit all over again.

Beautiful bride Samantha McCurdy and handsome groom Jason Tanner, both of Wyandotte, Oklahoma, were married at her family’s home in Delhi on May 7. More than 50 friends and family attended the wedding. Samantha is the oldest daughter of Darrel and Linda McCurdy, of Delhi. The weather was just about perfect and the casual but elegant wedding went off without a hitch. A reception followed. Pastor Dave Britton, of New Beginnings Church in Delhi, officiated. The couple were in California for a whirlwind week and “honeymooned” by seeing a Giants game while here. Samantha has been a Giants fan for as long as she can remember and she has the memorabilia to prove it.

Cody Carter, of Delhi, raised a hog for his FFA class at Livingston High School. He will sell his hog after he shows it at the Merced County Fair. Kevin Carter, also of Delhi, graduates from Livingston High School on June 3. Kevin also received an Honorable Mention at the Merced Art Show for a photograph he took. Connor McCurdy, of Turlock, received an Award for completing his Pre-school year at Sacred Heart School. Connor also celebrated his fourth birthday in Delhi. How quickly they grow up. He actually went swimming later in the afternoon but it was too cold for anyone else to go in. Brrr.

Delhi Unified School District Nurse Donald Gumm  would like to inform parents and students about the new Pertussis (whooping cough) immunization law. According to Gumm, this new law requires all California schools to make sure that all Seventh through Twelfth grade students have had their booster immunization, commonly called “Tdap,” on or after their tenth birthday. Students entering any grade seventh through twelfth must provide proof that they have had this booster in order to attend school.
This new law takes effect on July 1 of this year, which means students attending school for the 2011-12 school year must have received it. Any student not complying with this new requirement will be unable to attend any school in California.
Gumm wrote, “There is no grace period for schools to allow parents more time in obtaining this immunization.”

The weather has finally started warming and spring has truly arrived! I love spring and fall because I enjoy warm temperatures and sunshine. Though fall/autumn has always been my favorite, spring is definitely a close second. As the winter days seemed to drag on, I longed for good spring weather and we got some just in time for Easter and the week following.
On Saturday, April 23, I took my two kids into the Foothills near Knight’s Ferry where I met up with a dear friend of mine from high school. We hadn’t seen each other since just before Connor was born, so we were long overdue for a visit. The nice weather and this particular opportunity made it perfect. We hiked as we got caught up and both of my children took right to my friend, and her dad. It made me so happy.
Later in the week, I spent some time on the phone with another high school friend of mine. She and I often go for long periods between actual phone calls and visits, but we keep up with each other through e-mail and other means, such as Facebook. Still, nothing can replace a good, long phone call. I like that when we pick up the phone, we pick up where we left off and keep on going forward.
I needed this time to reconnect with these two friends. I have done a lot of strengthening my friendship connections recently and it reminds me who I am and what is important. Unfortunately, I have found that I don’t always reconnect soon enough. The last week of April also brought with it some terribly belated bad news.
