I hope you had a good Easter. We went to church in the morning and in the afternoon we had hamburgers and hotdogs, with lots of side dishes and desserts, followed by a huge Easter egg hunt. The weather was nice and the young ones went swimming. My grandson, Cody, actually had his first swim if the year on March 16. By Easter he had already been in the pool four or five times. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. Last week we had a couple of days in the nineties. Now that’s swimming weather.

I’ve been staying with my son and daughter-in-law in Turlock off and on for the last few weeks. I sleep in the same room with my two-year-old grandson, Connor. He usually wakes up very happy and plays in his crib until he’s ready to get up and then he lets you know about it. So one morning I wake up to whop, smack, thump followed by pain as a book conked me in the head with another one close behind that I managed to dodge. Seems I didn’t respond in a timely manner. I get up and all of the stuffed animals that are usually in his crib and as many books as he could reach were all over my bed. The kid has an arm. I must have been sleeping very soundly. He was standing in his crib with a big grin on his face. He was happy. Just ready for me to get up.

How was your Thanksgiving? Hope you had a good one. Ours was quiet but good. We’ve been pretty busy since then. Time just seems to evaporate. My brother-in-law Darrel and his wife, Linda, took me to play Bingo at Table Mountain. We enjoy the scenery after you leave the freeway. It’s beautiful country. Have you ever been there? The Bingo room was always nice but the club area was small, cramped, dark and stuffy. They have remodeled and it’s light, spacious, smells nice and their chairs are low enough for even me. They also have a good buffet serving breakfast items, pizza, American, Chinese and Mexican cuisine through the early afternoon. We didn’t “Bingo” but we had a good time. My daughter Jennifer and I went the following week but for some reason, there was no Bingo that day. Jenn won and I broke even and we had fun. They had their Christmas lights up and they are really nice.

Speaking of Christmas lights, Delhi has some pretty good ones. There are several on South Avenue. We especially enjoy the Hansen’s lighted wagons. Take a little time before you go to Christmas Tree Lane in Turlock and check out Delhi.

A recent tragedy is on the minds of many people right now. And it hits home for Delhi. Frances Casian, a teacher at El Capitan in Delhi, is going through what is probably the most tragic thing that can happen to a mother, the death of her two-year-old son, Axel. Axel was killed by his own father, Sergio Casian Aguiar of Turlock. Can there be anything worse? We will probably never know what caused Aguiar to commit this horrific act. Please pray for this family. I’m trying to keep in mind that Aguiar is also some mother’s son.

Connor Duncan’s first birthday party was a lot of fun. He loved his birthday cake. We went swimming even though the water was a little chilly. I took Connor underwater a couple of times and he didn’t bat an eye. He really loves the water. My grandsons Kevin and Cody also love to swim. They are lucky to have a pool. It was the river or the canal in my day. We preferred the river but we had to get somebody to take us and find the money for gas. Kids didn’t have cars like they do now. The lake was out of the question. Much too far. I wouldn’t think of going swimming in the canals now. In any case, I don’t think it’s permitted.

California residents have already had their say as far as the presidential primary is concerned, but there are still issues to consider and people to vote for in the official 2008 primary today.

Today’s ballot includes a couple of ballot measures, but the two items people will be watching are the attempt to recall State Senator Jeff Denham and the District Four supervisor race. Delhi residents will go to the polls today to cast their votes for their county supervisor as incumbent Deidre Kelsey faces challenger Ballico resident Claudine Sherron. They will also either vote for or against the recall of Senator Jeff Denham.

However you intend to vote today, the important thing is that you vote.

Get out and vote today June 3! Polls are open until 8 p.m.

What can you say about the suicide of one so young? I’m sure most of you know that a young woman from Atwater jumped to her death from the Shanks Road overpass in Delhi last week. Our prayers go out to her family and friends. What in her life could have been so bad that she felt she had no reason to live? And yet, I can remember feeling in my teens, more than once, like my world had ended. Only one personal friend actually took her own life. As it turns out, she was schizophrenic. Not much was known about schizophrenia in those days. At least it wasn’t discussed in my circle of friends. My friend was a warm, funny, intelligent girl and her loss was just that - a loss. If you know anyone you feel may be having a particularly hard time, talk to them. Let them know there is help available through school, doctors, church, friends, and yes, even parents. Sometimes just knowing that someone cares can make all the difference.
