Kenneth Riggs, founder of Riggs Ambulance Service (RAS) passed away the morning of July 1. He died of natural causes.

Riggs was not only the founder of RAS, but he was also the longest running Coroner for Merced County.  Riggs was appointed to the position of Coroner in 1955 and held the position until 1982 when Joe Sabo took the position. Sabo held the position until 1993 when the Merced Sheriff’s Office assumed the duties. Sheriff Mark Pazin is the current Coroner for Merced County. With 27 years of service as Coroner, Riggs has held the position longer than anyone else in the history of California.

“Ken was a valued member of our society and helped shape the face of Merced County,” Sheriff Pazin said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family with the knowledge that he will be sorely missed.”

Riggs passed away while under Hospice care on July 1.

The Merced Sheriff’s Office would like to thank him for all of his years of service. He will be remembered.

Kenneth Waldo Beard, Sr. 1935~2009

March 1935-April 2009 Ken Beard, 74, passed away at Memorial Hospital in Modesto on April 14. He was born in Morehouse, Missouri to Ernest and Vivian Beard in 1935. Ken graduated from Delhi Grammar School. He was very outspoken child in the fourth grade and a leader in all classes. Ken graduated in 1954 from Livingston High School. After high school, he went to work in Redwood City for Ampex Corp as a machinist for about 20 years. While in Redwood City, Ken had a love for fast pitch softball. He played on state championship team of Rector Cadillac Oldsmobile in early 1960s and 70s. He returned to Delhi to help with the family business.

Delhi Community Leader Kenneth Beard died on Tuesday, April 14. Beard had previously served on the Delhi Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) and on the Delhi Unified School District Board of Trustees. He was also a founding member of the Delhi Historical Society for which he had served as treasurer. He was a member of the Delhi Seniors Club.

A service will take place on Wednesday, April 29 at 3 p.m. at New Beginnings Christian Center on the corner of Stephens and Schendel across the street from Delhi United Drugs. A visitation will be at Allen Mortuary on Wednesday, April 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery on Thursday, April 30 at 3:00 p.m. The graveside service will be followed by a reception and time of remembrances at Delhi Community Presbyterian Church.

Pritam Kaur 1929-2009

Mrs. Pritam Kaur was born January 3, 1929 in India. She died March 22, 2009 at Elness Convelescent Hospital in Turlock. Kaur was a resident of Delhi for 20 years. She previously lived in Ceres from 1986 to 1989. Mrs. Kaur was a homemaker and attended the Turlock Sikh Temple.
She is survied by three sons Amrik Singh Samra, Nirmal Singh Samra, Malkit Singh
Samra all of Delhi, CA; and six grandhildren.

Alvin Ray Davis Aug.7, 1948-Aug.20, 2008
Alvin “Ray” Davis, 60, was born in Turlock on August 7, 1948 and grew up in Delhi. He graduated from Livingston High and enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served two tours in the Vietnam War. Ray earned numerous honors including a bronze star and two purple hearts before returning to the states and making his home in Taft, California. He soon married his soul-mate Robin, and became an integral part of the oilfield community. Ray was an ultimate outdoorsman and loved motorcycle riding, hunting and fishing. Ray retired from AERA Energy in 2007 and soon went to work in the oilfields of Oman where he passed away on August 20, 2008.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife Robin of Taft, daughter Christy Morassco and son-in-law Jason of Bakersfield, and Parents-in-law Bob and Mozelle Connick also of Taft. He is also survived by brothers: Billy Joe Davis, Roy Davis and wife Sam, and J.R. Davis all of Delhi, also by sisters: Catherine Emberson of Taft, Qula Quenzinger of Turlock, and Verna Black and husband Whittie of Turlock. Finally, by an infinite number of family and friends who will forever love and remember their real-life Superman “Uncle Ray.” Graveside services were held at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft on August 28, 2008. The family requests anyone wishing to make donations to do so to your local homeless veteran’s shelter or animal shelter.
