Today is a very special day, a day we honor our mothers. We all have mothers. Some are with us, some are far away, some are adoptive, some are step and some are no longer with us. Yet, we all have mothers.

From dictionary.com: “Mother is one of the surviving words from Anglo-Saxon (starting as modor), which are among the most fundamental words in English. Mother has many cognates in other languages, including Old High German muoter, Dutch moeder, Old Norse mothir, Latin mater, Greek meter, and Sanskrit mat. These words share an Indo-European root…Mom, a shortened form of momma, was recorded in 1894; momma was first used in 1884.”

Whatever you do today, remember your mother. We would not be here without our moms, that is for sure.

And to all of the mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers…Happy Mothers Day from The Delhi Express!

Please feel free to submit a special Mother’s Day thought below and we will post it just as soon as possible.

Every 15 Minutes” draws the dangers of drinking and driving to the attention of high school students.

For two days, Delhi High School juniors and seniors have gone through the program co-ordinated by the DHS ASB and local emergency agencies including the California Highway Patrol, Merced County Sheriff’s Department and Delhi Fire Department.

Yesterday, a car accident took place on the football field. As the students found out by watching video footage today, three of their classmates “died,” one was “arrested,” and the fifth was “paralyzed.”

Students and parents wrote letters after an agonizing day yesterday. Students who were “victims” of alcohol-related accidents did not go home Tuesday night. Today, they reunited with their families. Some of the letters written last night were shared during today’s assembly.

School Resource Officer Joey Cardenas led today’s assembly. He also extended a very important offer to students. After encouraging them to not drink, he told them that if they found themselves in a situation where they had been driinking, they could call the Sheriff’s dispatch and request to speak to Deputy Cardenas. Cardenas said he would pick up any student who needed a ride home, at any time.

The “Every 15 Minutes” program is put on for juniors and seniors every two years.
