Although summer remains a month away, the first signs of it appeared in Delhi this weekend as Delhi students prepare for the last of the 2008-09 school year.

The end of the school year has arrived. Students in Delhi Unified Schools will wrap up the year during the week of May 18. The last finals will be taken, high school seniors will continue with graduation activities, students will sign yearbooks and t-shirts to remind each of other of the year past and to wish each other well for the upcoming summer.

DHS seniors went for their Disneyland Grad Nite 2009 trip Thursday, May 14. Yearbooks were handed out to high school students earlier in the week.

I know what I want to write. I know what I want to include in this column. I don’t know where to begin nor where to end. I have done just about everything I can to procrastinate in writing this month’s column. I can’t continue to do so, though. I’ve put some music on to play in the background and I’m not sure if it is helping or hindering. I guess we’ll see. Mahalia Jackson is singing “Rock of Ages.” What an amazing voice!

I am struggling to write this time around because our family is in the midst of a personal tragedy that at some moments is consuming. Of course, I’m not sure anyone would expect it to not be consuming for us.

I only recently wrote about my pregnancy in one of my columns. I experienced some ups and downs during the pregnancy. It was quite different from my pregnancy with Connor. I will spare our dear readers all of the details. But, our second son was stillborn on Sunday, April 26. You will find a short obituary in our obituary section this month. I’m a mom of two boys and yet, I have only one to hold in my arms.

I hope you had a good Easter. We went to church in the morning and in the afternoon we had hamburgers and hotdogs, with lots of side dishes and desserts, followed by a huge Easter egg hunt. The weather was nice and the young ones went swimming. My grandson, Cody, actually had his first swim if the year on March 16. By Easter he had already been in the pool four or five times. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. Last week we had a couple of days in the nineties. Now that’s swimming weather.

I’ve been staying with my son and daughter-in-law in Turlock off and on for the last few weeks. I sleep in the same room with my two-year-old grandson, Connor. He usually wakes up very happy and plays in his crib until he’s ready to get up and then he lets you know about it. So one morning I wake up to whop, smack, thump followed by pain as a book conked me in the head with another one close behind that I managed to dodge. Seems I didn’t respond in a timely manner. I get up and all of the stuffed animals that are usually in his crib and as many books as he could reach were all over my bed. The kid has an arm. I must have been sleeping very soundly. He was standing in his crib with a big grin on his face. He was happy. Just ready for me to get up.
