<! — @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } — >It’s a very cool field trip that gives kids an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the 2009 Merced County Fair and it’s free.

Hands-on ag education is the goal of the one-day only event. The fair is offering special tours of exhibit buildings and the Old MacDonald’s Farm for children’s groups from area schools, Scouting organizations and summer recreation programs.

The fair is July 21-26 and reservations for the free one-hour tours are available now. The tours will take place on Thursday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. Junior Fair Board members greet youngsters when they arrive and assist with tours. Tours are offered before the fairgrounds open to the general public, so kids get a chance to experience the farm and exhibit buildings when there’s more elbowroom.

The fair’s theme is “Catch The Buzz,” and many of the exhibits at Old MacDonald’s Farm and Petting Barn and the Merced Animal Medical Center Ag Exhibits Building will feature bees, one of the county’s top agricultural products.

The California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) is asking people to show their support for the state’s parks and have some fun in the process. On their website they have outlined the where as “your favorite state park.” The weekend of June 20 and 21 includes Father’s Day. People are encouraged to wear a green ribbon and/or green clothing and to take a sign with them in support of the state parks.

SOS stands for Save Our State Parks. If you’re unable to go to a park that weekend, CSPF encourages you to go any time between now and June 21. Anyone who does something such as this to show their support is asked to take photos and submit them to the website.

Delhi’s most local state park is the McConnell State Recreation Area on Pepper, just east of Delhi. Other fun state park trips could include Caswell State Park in Ripon, 1897 Railtown in Jamestown, Columbia State Historic Park or Calavaras Big Trees. Those willing to travel a greater distance may be interested in one of the many Bay Area parks, Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento, Mission San Juan Bautista or Henry Coe State Park in Morgan Hill.

For more information on the SOS weekend, please visit the CSPF’s website. They also have signs available for download and will soon have a way to upload photos and videos taken at and in support of California’s state parks.
