On August 25, 2009, I went to pick up my fathers brown bag and received the following information in a letter:

To: All Brown Bag Recipients:
RE: CLOSURE OF BROWN BAG

On August 18th, 2009 the Board of Supervisors eliminated the funding which supports our BROWN BAG PROGAM.

The Merced County Food Bank truly desires to continue to provide you and many other families in Merced County a healthy nutritious bag of food every two weeks. Without this funding we will either be forced to shut the program down completely or initiate a mandatory membership fee of $40.00 per year for the continuance of the program.

Please contact your COUNTY SUPERVISOR and request that the funding be restored for the BROWN BAG PROGRAM.

The following is a list of Supervisors; the phone number where they can be reached; their e-mail address and the district that they serve:

District 1 John Pedrozo 385-7366 jpedrozo@co.merced.ca.us

District 2 Hub Walsh 385-7366 hwalsh@co.merced.ca.us

District 3 Mike Nelson 385-7366 mnelson@co.merced.ca.us

District 4 Deidre Kelsey 385-7366 dkelsey@co.merced.ca.us

District 5 Jerry O’Banion 385-7366 jobanion@co.merced.ca.us

Thank you for your assistance in helping us keep this much needed program going in Merced County.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Merced County Food Bank at (209) 726-3663 or talk to your site coordinator and they will contact us.

Phyllis Legg
Executive Director
Merced County Food Bank

I have watched the seniors come to pick up their brown bags. Every one of them appreciates the assistance. Let us keep the brown bag program and continue working with local stores in each area to collect a healthy meal for our seniors.

There must be a way.

Sincerely,

Ellen Wells

Hilmar

At the July meeting of the Delhi Municipal Advisory Council (MAC), it was announced that a Merced County Association of Governments (MCAG) Regional Transportation Community Workshop will take place about one hour prior to the October MAC meeting. This will take place on Thursday, October 8. According to MAC Chairman Richard Jantz, the start time for the MCAG workshop will likely be 5:30 p.m. The time will be confirmed soon. The MAC meets at 7 p.m.

The MAC discussed an ad-hoc group of local community leaders, county representatives and business people that has met a couple of times this summer. The group has discussed four priorities for Delhi: slowing traffic on Stephens Street; improving downtown including the placement of curbs, gutters and sidewalks throughout; “signage” for Delhi to draw people in and the infrastructure needs for the Bradbury/Highway 99 area.

“County staff, including Public Works and Economic Development, have been very helpful,” Jantz said.

This Friday, August 14, a benefit concert for Young Life will take place at Church of the Cross in Delhi. It is located at 9664 Hinton Avenue.

Young Life is a new ministry that many community members have started working to develop for Delhi. It is a larger ministry that works with people in areas to develop programs for local youth. It is not just for major metropolitan areas, but also for smaller communities such as Delhi.

It starts with adults who are concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authentic friendship,” says the Young Life website. “These relationships don’t happen overnight — they take time, patience, trust and consistency.”

The benefit concert will feature bands including Dream Universe, The Cottons, Better Left Unsaid, KRH and 3 Dead in Washington. The cost is just $5. It begins at 7 p.m.
