Due to illness, we were unable to have anyone photograph the carnival at Holy Ground Ministries and the DHS football game on Friday evening. Anyone who has any photos of either of these two events is encouraged to submit them to us.
We also will be unable to attend the Harvest Festival tonight at Church of the Cross. We would appreciate any photos of that event as well.
Thank you! Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Riding the Rails Trip #1
I took #714 South to Bakersfield, then the bus to Union Station in L.A.
For the return trip, I took the bus from L.A. to Bakersfield and then train #713 home to the Denair station.
I set out on train #714. The Amtrak train would take me from the Turlock/Denair station (located on Santa Fe in Denair) to the end of the line in Bakersfield. There, I would board a bus and travel over the Grapevine to Los Angeles’ Union Station. I was taking the trip to help out some family and I didn’t want to worry about driving and all the stress that often comes along with it.
I scheduled a train that left late enough that I was able to attend church with my two-year-old in the morning and still early enough that I was able to have dinner with my girlfriend in Los Angeles that evening. It was perfect.
While the Turlock/Denair train station is little more than an over-sized bus stop, it still makes for a nice send-off point. Connor seemed to like watching the train pull out of the station, though he later realized that the train was taking mommy away for a few days. I waved to my family as the train headed south down the tracks. I wish they had actually seen me as I waved.
I had no intention of eating anything on the train, but that didn’t take long to change. When I got my cup of coffee and saw that some of the prices were really reasonable, I knew I would have to take another look. So, when I was still hungry after eating the bagel I’d brought along, I scoped out the rest of the menu. One of the things that they had was a Hummus Snack Kit. I gave it a try and it was so worth it. It was pretty good as was the price. It cost $2.50. I also got a refill on my cup of coffee. That was a well-spent $1.50, too. The coffee includes free refills.
The candies are a little pricier than many places, but they are “king sized” candies and the prices are still better than you find at a movie theater.
The light snack was filling enough for my lunchtime travel, but didn’t fill me too much. I was still able to enjoy a nice dinner with my friend and her husband upon my arrival in Los Angeles.

Community Informational Night
On Thursday, October 1, Delhi Unified School District presented a Community Informational Night at Delhi High School. Information about the event was distributed through the schools and parents, teachers and students all turned out for the event.
Each school and some of the district departments and programs had information tables set up in the DHS cafeteria.
The evening started with parents checking in with their schools’ tables and gathering information on programs and services. Just before 6 p.m., the Merced County Sheriff’s Department and the Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new boxing ring located in the “E” building on the Ed Park campus.
Glenn Engineering, Merced County District Four Supervisor Deidre Kelsey, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association and DUSD were among those who made the boxing ring possible.
“I really appreciate the work these deputies have done,” said Kelsey as she addressed a small crowd present for the ribbon-cutting.
It is more than a boxing ring, though. It is a Sanctioned Gym through USA Boxing, according School Resource Officer Deputy Joey Cardenas.
Following the ribbon cutting, a boxing demonstration took place.

The Merced Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the 9000 block of Donovans Way in Delhi this morning, with a hysterical woman on the line. The phone went dead so deputies responded to do a welfare check. When they arrived, deputies saw blood on the doorstep.

At the same time a deputy was getting ready to make a vehicle stop on a car driving erratically at Swanson and Merced Avenue. The driver pulled to the side of the road after seeing the deputy behind her. She got out and handed a 17-month-old boy to the deputy. The woman had been the hysterical female on the phone and told deputies that she was babysitting the 17-month-old boy when her 65-pound Pit Bull got a hold of the child and dragged him around the yard by the throat. The babysitter was able to get the dog to let go of the baby by stabbing the dog with a fork several times. The babysitter dialed 911 then hung up and put the baby in the car to drive him to the hospital.

EMT responded to Merced Avenue and Swanson and transported the child to Turlock Emanuel Hospital where he was air lifted to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. He was pronounced dead not long after arriving there. There were no other children at the house and the relationship between the babysitter and the child is unknown. No charges have been filed at this time, and the incident is still under investigation.

Animal Control has taken custody of the dog and the child’s parents have been notified.

This was the second serious attack by such a dog this month. A woman walking her dog was attacked near the intersection of Shanks and Letteau earlier this month. The dog in that case was reportedly euthanized after being quarantined following the attack. The woman and her dog were both injured in that attack. Both are recovering from their wounds.
